Pinus fenzeliana

N.Vietnam, Cao Bang Prov., Trung Khanh Distr., Ngoc Khe Municipality, Pac Nga village, around point 22º54'59''N, 106º31'44''E, at elevation 700-800 m a.s.l. Remnants of primary broad-leaved evergreen and coniferous forest along tops of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 8-12 m tall, 25-35 cm in diam. Rare due to logging. Former co-dominant of primary coniferous forest, that presently extinct.

Tree 6-12 m. Not common due to total logging about 15 years ago. Former co-dominant of first stratum of extinct coniferous closed forests.

Primary broadleaved evergreen closed wet forest on very steep slopes and cliffs of remnant mountains composed with highly eroded crystalline limestone on top of ridge at elev. 900-1000 m a.s.l. Tree up to 20 m hg. Occasional.

N.Vietnam, Bac Kan Prov., Cho Don Distr., Ban Thi Municipality, village Phia Khao, around point 22º16'58''N, 105º31'20''E at elevation 800-900 m a.s.l. (Lung Chang and Lung Li mountains). Primary broad-leaved evergreen closed and coniferous (with Pinus kwangtungensis) forest on very steep slopes and cliffs along tops of rocky ridge composed with solid marble-like stratified limestone. Tree 10-15 m tall. Occasional mono-dominant of coniferous forest (first stratum), particularly on tops of ridge at elevations 900-1000 m a.s.l.

Cao Bang Prov., Bao Lac Distr., Hong An municipality, Mi Lung village. Primary broad-leaved and mixed humid evergreen forest on very steep slopes and along rocky ridge composed with solid crystalline highly eroded limestone at elevation 1500-1550 m a.s.l. around point 22°50’01.3’’N 105°50’05.7’’E. Tree 20-30 m tall on very steep rocky slopes and cliffs as well as on mountain tops. Common. Usual co-dominant of mixed and coniferous forest in the area on ridge edges. Widely logged.

Saravan Prov., Ta Oy Distr., to the SW of Sa Mouay town, near Thong Hang village, around point 15°37’30.9”N 106°12’26.5”E. Dry old open coniferous forest with Pinus latteri intermixed with species of Dipterocarpus at elevation 650-700 m. Tree to 30 m tall and 1 m DBH. Coniferous forest dominant.

Vietnam, Lam Dong Prov., Lac Duong Distr., Da Chais Municipality, around point 12º11’09’N 108º41’20’’E, at elevation about 1600 m a.s.l. Primary coniferous mossy wet forest with Pinus dalatensis and P. krempfii on W slope of Hon Giao ridge. Tree 25-35(40) m tall. Very common. Co-dominant of 1 stratum of coniferous forest.

Vietnam, Dak Lak Prov., Krong Bong Distr., Hoa Son Municipality, vicinities of Krong Kmar river, NE slopes of Chu Yang Sin mt system at elevation 1000-1400 m a.s.l. around point 12º27’55’’N 108º19’00’’E. Primary mixed broad-leaved and coniferous forest with Pinus latteri and P. krempfii along ridge edge. Tree 15-20 m high (up to 45 m tall). Very common. Co-dominant of mixed and coniferous forest.
