Paphiopedilum appletonianum (Gower) Rolfe
S. Vietnam, Kontum Prov., Kon Plong Distr., Hieu Municipality, Mang La forest enterprise (14ø39'N, 108ø25'E). Primary wet mossy mountain coniferous forest on sandstone (with Pinus dalatensis, Fokienia
hodginsii, Dacrydium elatum, Dacrycarpus imbricatus) along ridge tops at elev. 1200 m. Terrestrial and occasionally epilitic herb at base of old trees in wet mossy shady places. Locally common. Central sepal light green with olive-brownish base, petals light pink-violet with green base and deep brown spots and warts along upper margin, sometimes with indistinct brownish stripes toward base. Lip dull pinkish-violet with green base and green margin. Synsepalum light apple green. Staminode emerald green with yellowish-white margin and central spot.
