Northern Vietnam, Hoa Binh Province, Lac Son District, Ngoc Son Municipality, near Khu Village, approximately 20°26′32′′N 105°19′52′′E, primary broad-leaved forest on eroded steep rocky slopes of limestone at 585–610 m, 11.12.2017, Bleddyn Wynn-Jones, BWJ 15638.
Growing on very steep unsteady loose limestone cliffs, within a lowland primary broad-leaved evergreen forest, with very few other herbaceous plants. A lithophytic perennial herbaceous plant, arising from the terminal areas of long slender almost woody grey-brown rhizomes, held in place by exceptionally long (to 50 cm) probing roots only slightly thinner than the supported rhizomes. Flowering in cultivation in Wales July to September.
