Northern Vietnam, Lao Cai Prov., Van Ban Distr., to the west of Nam Xay village (1 km to the W of point 21°59′00′'N, 104°02′00′'E). Primary broad-leaved evergreen montane forest with Fokienia hodginsii (as emergent) on granite and quartzite very steep slopes at elev. 1600 m a.s.l. Lithophytic herb in crevices of vertical sides of large shady granite boulders. Leaves deep green above, light green with brown nerves below, young leaves brightly red-purple. Not common.
