Primary broad-leaved evergreen closed wet forest on SW slopes composed with crystalline highly metamorphosed sandstone. Sapling 1 m tall of tree up to 25 m high. Locally common.

Co-dominant of first forest stratum.

Tree to 35 m tall, to 60 cm DBH on steep shady rocky slope near to mountain top and on top. Co-dominant of coniferous forest.

Flowers white with light purple tint. Very common, particularly among open secondary scrub.

Remnants of primary broad-leaved and coniferous forest on ridge tops and on very steep slopes and cliffs of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 6-10 m tall. Not common due to total logging. Former co-dominant of primary closed coniferous forest that extinct here 15-20 years ago.

Remnants of primary evergreen broad-leaved and mixed forest (with Pinus wangii) on very steep rocky slopes and on mountain tops composed with highly eroded karstic light gray marble-like limestone at elevation 1300-1350 m a.s.l. Tree to 25 m tall and 80 cm DBH on rocky ridge edge. Still common. Former first stratum forest co-dominant. Logged widely. Regeneration very poor. Only 1 seedling was seen.

Broad-leaved and coniferous (with Pinus kwangtungensis and Calocedrus rupestris) evergreen forest on steep slopes and on tops of ridge composed with rocky crystalline solid marble-like highly eroded limestone at elev. 1100-1300 m a.s.l. Tree up to 20 m tall. Main dominant of coniferous forest along ridge edge and on ridge tops.

Northern Vietnam, Ha Giang Prov., Quan Ba Distr., Can Ty Municipality, in the vicinity of Lung Vai village at left side of Mien River, around point 23ø05'09''N, 105ø03'23''E. Primary coniferous forest with Pseudotsuga brevifolia and Tsuga chinensis on remnant highly eroded limestone ridge at elev. 1440 m a.s.l. Tree 15-20 m hg and up to 50 cm in diam. Rare associate of first forest stratum.

N.Vietnam, Cao Bang Prov., Trung Khanh Distr., Ngoc Khe Municipality, Pac Nga village, around point 22º54'59''N, 106º31'44''E, at elevation 700-800 m a.s.l. Remnants of primary broad-leaved evergreen and coniferous forest along tops of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 8-12 m tall, 25-35 cm in diam. Rare due to logging. Former co-dominant of primary coniferous forest, that presently extinct.

N.Vietnam, Cao Bang Prov., Trung Khanh Distr., Ngoc Khe Municipality, Pac Nga village, around point 22º54'59''N, 106º31'44''E, at elevation 800-850 m a.s.l. Remnants of primary broad-leaved and coniferous forest on ridge tops and on very steep slopes and cliffs of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 6-12 m. Not common due to total logging about 15 years ago. Former co-dominant of first stratum of extinct coniferous closed forests.
