Primary broad-leaved evergreen closed wet forest on very steep slopes and cliffs of rocky ridges and mesae composed with white solid marble-like crystalline limestone. Tree 8-15 m tall on tops of ridge. Common. Occasional co-dominant of fragments of coniferous forest on tops of ridges.

Northern Vietnam, Ha Giang Prov., Quan Ba Distr., Can Ty Municipality, in the vicinity of Sin Suoi Ho village at right side of Mien River, around point 23ø07'12''N, 105ø00'52''E. Primary coniferous forest with Pseudotsuga brevifolia on remnant highly eroded limestone ridge at elev. 1000-1200 m a.s.l. Tree 15-20 m hg up to 0.5 m in diam. Monodominant of coniferous forest on tops of ridges.

Primary open coniferous mossy forest along tops of limestone remnant karst ridge at 1500 m alt. Tree 15-20 m hg. Codominante of 1 forest stratum.

Tree 15-20 m hg. Codominante (sometime monodominante) of mixed and coniferous forests on tops of limestone ridges all over the Cao Bang area.

Quang Nam Prov., Dai Loc Distr., Dai Hong municipality, environs of Dai Hong town around point 15°49’44”N 107°57’19”E. Remnants of primary and secondary dry broad-leaved evergreen forest on rocky sandy uplifted plateau composed with eroded sandstone at elev. about 550 m a.s.l. Tree 15-20 m tall on rocky places along plateaus cliff. Not rare. Former dominant of primary forest.

Pinus wangii Hu & W.C.Cheng

Son La Prov., Van Ho Distr., Van Ho comm., Hua Tat village, around point 20°46’21.7N 104°47’47.5E. Remnants of primary evergreen broad-leaved and mixed forest (with Pinus wangii) on very steep rocky slopes and on mountain tops composed with highly eroded karstic light gray marble-like limestone at elevation 1300-1350 m a.s.l. Tree to 25 m tall and 80 cm DBH on rocky ridge edge. Still common. Former first stratum forest co-dominant. Logged widely. Regeneration very poor. Only 1 seedling was seen.

Primary evergreen seasonal broad-leaved and coniferous submontane forest on crystalline marble-like highly eroded limestone, very steep upper slopes and tops of limestone rocky ridge at elev. 800-850 m. Tree 15-20 m tall. Monodominant of coniferous forest on tops of ridge.

Broad-leaved and coniferous (with Pinus kwangtungensis and Calocedrus rupestris) evergreen forest on steep slopes and on tops of ridge composed with rocky crystalline solid marble-like highly eroded limestone at elev. 1100-1300 m a.s.l. Tree up to 20 m tall. Main dominant of coniferous forest along ridge edge and on ridge tops.

N.Vietnam, Cao Bang Prov., Trung Khanh Distr., Ngoc Khe Municipality, Pac Nga village, around point 22º54'59''N, 106º31'44''E, at elevation 700-800 m a.s.l. Remnants of primary broad-leaved evergreen and coniferous forest along tops of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 8-12 m tall, 25-35 cm in diam. Rare due to logging. Former co-dominant of primary coniferous forest, that presently extinct.

N.Vietnam, Cao Bang Prov., Trung Khanh Distr., Ngoc Khe Municipality, Pac Nga village, around point 22º54'59''N, 106º31'44''E, at elevation 800-850 m a.s.l. Remnants of primary broad-leaved and coniferous forest on ridge tops and on very steep slopes and cliffs of rocky ridges and mesae composed with light gray solid marble-like highly eroded crystalline limestone. Tree 6-12 m. Not common due to total logging about 15 years ago. Former co-dominant of first stratum of extinct coniferous closed forests.

Primary broad-leaved evergreen closed and coniferous (with Pinus kwangtungensis) forest on very steep slopes and cliffs along tops of rocky ridge composed with solid marble-like stratified limestone. Tree 10-15 m tall. Occasional mono-dominant of coniferous forest (first stratum), particularly on tops of ridge at elevations 900-1000 m a.s.l.

Primary broad-leaved and mixed humid evergreen forest on very steep slopes and along rocky ridge composed with solid crystalline highly eroded limestone at elevation 1500-1550 m a.s.l. around point 22°50’01.3’’N 105°50’05.7’’E. Tree 20-30 m tall on very steep rocky slopes and cliffs as well as on mountain tops. Common. Usual co-dominant of mixed and coniferous forest in the area on ridge edges. Widely logged.
